Homare tried likewise to work, first as a papergirl and later delivering milk, but was fired from both jobs, contributing even further to her lack of self-confidence.Īccording to Homare, Sumire was trying to save this money so that they could leave their home and live together, independent of their parents, and Homare could return to school and live a normal life, although their father would confiscate much of her money and use it to gamble.Īfter catching a fever when she was fifteen, Homare was bedbound at home and her father, having returned early after losing money on a bet, became angry at her coughing and lying around. Hoping to continue teaching her younger sister as best she could, Sumire would pick up textbooks and bring them home, and found work as a papergirl to save money for them both. When they were still young, Homare and Sumire were removed from school and prevented from pursuing an education. ![]() With an absent mother and an abusive, alcoholic father, Homare was often subjected to verbal abuse about how she was useless and burdensome, but her older sister, Sumire, doted on her and acted as her shield, fighting back against their father and comforting Homare.
